I'm wondering why no abdl manufacturer has done a proper vintage Pampers replica of their fanfold disposables that so many remember either wearing or using for their babies.
I do remember someone mentioning possible patent infringements, but by now it must be open for anyone to replicate, no?
Anyway, I was just wondering because I'm sure I'm not the only one that would jump all over them if they were to come out.

Patents usually last for 20 years. I'm not sure when the design was patented, or if it's too expensive to manufacture them for what is - comparatively speaking - a niche market.

The price to manufacture makes sense, but isn't the entire abdl scene in itself, a niche market?
I would think that to the older generations that wore those fanfolds and remember them would be the people that would be all over them if they were made for their sizes. I mean, people go apeshit for the abu SDK's because they're a Pampers replica...
I for one would love to try a fanfold disposable, my intrest has been piqued!
Old school for the win.

Adult fanfold sposies are essentially underpads someone had put side tabs for optional use as a non-fitted brief.
They're thin and very prone to leakage. Not recommended for heavy and severe incontinence cases.

Older generations who had grown up with fanfold sposies switched to Attends and Depend shortly after.

I grew up wearing fan fold Pampers and only stopped wearing them when they no longer where made.
I would love to wear fan fold adult diapers if they where made.

I wonder if those Goodnite bed mats or disposable absorbent mats can be makeshifted into one.

Surecare marketed wing fold adult diapers for many years in the 1980s and early 1990s. These were the only adult diapers I've ever seen that actually said 'Diaper Style' on the package. There were no leg gathers and just one tape per side. The downside, as others have noted, was that they leaked easily.
I imagine one can be recreated by finding the right sized disposable bed pad and using a hot glue gun. I bought many packages of these in the mid- and late 1980s, just because there were essentially adult sized wing fold Pampers.

I don't believe Pampers fan fold design had SAP. That is a game changer with regards to leakage. It would seem an easy thing to do, make a modern, thick mat with SAP and use it in a flat bed pad design.

To make it a non-fitted brief stick a pair or two of side tabs.

Domtar also marketed a similar product under the Confidence brand. This product is no longer into production.

AB Universe had them back in the day, but I guess it was never a big seller. I never tried them.

Yes original nappies didn't have tapes they were more of a pad they used baby pins on the first disposables but parents used tape as it was better pampers added the tapes a little bit later then was the shape changes etc

Sorry, but I really don’t know … what is a fanfold diaper?

I was just about to ask didn't abuniverse make these way back when they were a fairly new company... I guess this answers my question, thanks for finding that info!

Hourglass-shaped sposies were first introduced in the mid-1970s with Luvs and Huggies.
It was only after the end of the decade P&G and K&C began making hourglass-shaped adult briefs.

Fanfold diaper: So they were a rectangular sheet of absorbent material? Like a flat cloth diaper only disposable? Did they have a waterproof backing or were plastic pants required?

Yeah, just think original Pampers, but with adhesive tabs added. (The first Pampers we’re actually pin-on, believe it or not.)
I remember seeing those fanfold diapers on Old ABU’s website ten or so years back. It’s definitely not a style of diaper I have any nostalgia for, despite that it was a thing when I was a baby.

I wore vintage style Pampers growing up (fanfold). They leaked and messes were also prone to falling out. Early adult disposables were also fanfold with one tab per side (Surecare and Ambeze, to name a few of the brands). They were much thinner than Pampers and prone to leaking and tearing.
I don’t know about others, but I wear diapers to keep in leaks and messes. if you want fanfold, try a cloth prefold and plastic pants, otherwise the disposables available today are way better than those of the 70’s and 80’s.
